GETTING AROUND MALAGA CITY

Malaga City is a perfect size for sightseeing on foot, with most of the main attractions, and the beach, being within easy walking distance. However, there are good public and private transport options – train, bus, tour bus and taxi – so you if you don’t feel like walking you have a good choice of alternatives for getting around Malaga and its suburbs.

ARRIVING TO MALAGA CITY

Most visitors arrive to the city by plane, although the high speed RENFE train link from Madrid is also extremely efficient. If you are arriving to the airport, then you won’t have far to get to the city, the airport is just 10 kilometres away and there are several alternative transport options from the airport. You can catch the number 19 bus from the main terminal that takes around 30 minutes to reach the city centre bus terminal, depending on the hour and the traffic. Buses run approximately every 30 minutes. There are many bus stops in the city and you can check your location and get off at the nearest stop to you. The last stop on the route is at Calle Larios, opposite Malaga Port. Here you will be smack bang in the centre of the city. See time table here The new bus route line 75 takes you straight to the heart of Malaga city. It takes 25 minutes and the prices is 2,00 € for a single fare. See time table here If you prefer to hop on the train, once you come out of the arrivals you will see signs to take you to the train platform. Announcements for trains are made in Spanish and English and the train will take you into the city centre and also to Fuengirola. It takes around 13 minutes to arrive into Malaga city centre. Don’t forget you must purchase your tickets before you board the train – single fare is 1,95 €. You will find ticket machines positioned at the entrance of the train station. See timetable here Alternatively you can take a taxi, which you can pick up outside the main terminal. There are plenty of taxis always waiting for passengers and the fare will cost you around 25 euros. There are also plenty of options for a hire care within the airport terminal. If you are arriving to Malaga on the fast RENFE train then you will arrive into Malagas main Railway station Maria Zambrano. The train station is situated next to the bus terminal in the city centre. To get from the main train station to the historic city centre the easiest way is to catch the train to Malaga-Centro Alameda.

GETTING AROUND THE CITY

Part of the fun and enjoyment of a cultural city break is being able to soak up the atmosphere of the city. This is easy in Malaga as you can visit most of the city and its cultural attractions on foot. Much of the historical centre is pedestrianised and you can walk to the Picasso Museum, Malaga Cathedral and Alcazaba Fortress, amongst other of the city’s top attractions. You can also walk to Malaga’s Malagueta Beach from the main city centre.

MALAGA BUSES

Malaga has a good bus network and you catch a bus from any of the official stops, the Alameda Principal or the main bus station. You can buy a single or multi ticket, which gives you 10 rides. Buses run from 06.45am to 11pm and there are a number of night service buses. Aside from taking trips around the city, you can also catch a bus to explore the surrounding towns and villages along the Costa del Sol.

TOUR BUS

There is an open top double decker tour bus, which you can pick up from the main bus station. It’s a fun way to see some of the city’s attractions and it will also take you up to the Gibralfaro Castle, where you can stop off and catch another bus back again. See prices and more info here.

MALAGA TAXIS

There are lots of taxis around Malaga; they are white with a blue strip. You will see a few taxi ranks dotted around the city, but if you see the green light on then you can hail a taxi from anywhere. Most destinations within the city will cost around 5€.

MALAGA TRAINS

Currently you can catch trains in and out of the city. Local trains (Cercanias) will take you along the coast to Fuengirola and the fast service RENFE train will take you to Cordoba and the Spanish capital Madrid.
